Now everyone who knows me knows that I love bread, in any form at any time of day and I really miss all different types of bread from home especially the rye sourdough breads. They just seem to be easier on the tummy when you try and digest them. So when my birthday came around again this year I got the chance to learn how to make proper sourdough bread with Rebecca from the TwoMagpies bakery. This was at the beginning of 2020 before lockdown hit and the world changed forever. It was a totally amazing day, we learned so much and were really well looked after. Patries and croissants to start the course off and after all our hard work that morning we were served the most amazing lunch, with home made soup and some very yummy sourdough based sandwiches with several delicious toppings such as smoked coronation chicken and smashed avocado. And to top it all off cakes and brownies & coffee in the afternoon

Having an expert on hand to show us how to do the sourdough properly is much easier than trying to work things out from a book. I never considered the temperature of the dough/water and flour before and that fact alone has been a total eye opener. Sourdough is one of those things that just takes time and a bit or planning as there are several resting stages involved. We also did not spend a lot of time kneeding but instead rested the dough and then folded it and rested and folded again, several times. Rebecca is such a good teacher and was able to accommodate all the different levels of experience from ‘never baked bread’ to ‘tried to make sourdough last week’.

She explained things really well and made us all feel very welcome, all our questions were answered and we went way with a lovely goody bag with marriages flour, dough scraper and the amazing breads we made on the day such as rye, muesli loaf, wheat & rye sourdough, breadsticks and fougasse.

Another fun event with Do Good networking at Age UK Suffolk this month. This one was really busy and we were all put to work wrapping pressies, writing christmas cards and preparing hampers and raffle prizes. Amazing how much time it would have taken one person, but there were quite a few of us so it was done in no time at all. The presents and raffle prizes were wrapped up for the Age UK Chinwags, that are being hosted on a regular basis to get older people out of the house and meeting others and having a bit of fun. Check out this lovely video that Age UK made about their chinwags https://youtu.be/9JhFKcdg5AY. It’s a great way to get together and help people who may not see anyone all week and have less social contact than they used to. Here are the dates and locations of the next few chinwags, if you know anyone who might enjoy coming along to them, why not pass on a message:

Woodbridge Community Hall, Station Road, Woodbridge, IP12 4AU – 3rd January 2020, 7th February 2020 – 10.00am – 12.00pm

The Limes Hotel, Needham Market, IP6 8DQ – 7th January 2020- 2-4pm

Kesgrave Conference Centre, Twelve Acre Approach, Kesgrave, IP5 1JF – 20th December 2019, 17th January 2020 –  2-4pm

Have you seen the Ark that has pulled into Ipswich Marina yet? My friend Tina and I went to see it the other day with our little ones. Now, I should just add that I am not a believer but I was intrigued to see it. Just the sheer size of it is truly amazing and it is beautiful inside too. It is 70 meters long and 4 stories high. Half the size of Noah’s original. There is a lake in the lower deck with real fish. Go and see it if you can! It’s buggy friendly too as they have a lift.

Lovely cookery day at Kenton Hall – South Indian Cookery with Padmaja.

Learned some yummy new recipes from Paddi and even had some left over to take home! Things like Coconut rice, Bombay potatoes, Beans Poriyal, Chicken Curry and Lentils with chilli and coriander. Paddi also used this yummy spice on the poppadums we ate for lunch called chunky chat, they definitely elevate poppadums to whole new level of taste! Also it was the first time I had grated carrot in my Raita and it was really delicious!

Back in June I had to chance to attend my first ‘Do Good Networking‘ event. They offer a really different approach to networking, where you actively do some good for a couple of hours, like a beach clean or tidying up the community garden of a charity, really hands on. Rather than standing about drinking tea and coffee and swapping business cards (nothing against normal networking which is also enjoyable). It’s great fun and you really do get a chance to get mucky. We were working in the garden of local homeless charity Emmaus Suffolk. Helping to tidy the garden up, which had been pretty overgrown with weeds etc. Overseeing the work was Joe from Urban Growth Enterprise CIC.

Felt great after a morning of garden to see the final space look like new. We also managed to give the fence a lick of paint to refresh it. Everyone was mucking in and it felt like you were really doing something positive. It definitely gave you that warm glow inside. The weather was glorious too and the local bakery donated some yummy goodies for us to munch while we had a tea break. Look forward to the next one!

Had the pleasure of working with Brendan and Dave from The Unruly Pig again. It’s always great fun to work with these guys and I absolutely adore the food! This was just before the nomination came in for the category of ‘Best for Wine’ in the Great British Pub Awards 2019. Everyone was very excited to be nominated and I am pleased to say that they won! Well done you guys! Very well deserved! The restaurant has won a bunch of awards so far, also this year Dave the head chef won the ‘ Best Pub restaurant Chef award – which is fantastic!

We thought this time we’d do a fun shot of Dave and as the name of the restaurant lends itself to something a bit quirky we thought we might involve a pigs head. Also some front of house shots, a portrait of a reluctant Brendan and some food shots to complete the day.

Had a pic in the Guardian small business network section the other day thanks to my friend Jane who was interviewed for the article and runs her own successful business making handmade, personalised gifts in Suffolk.

Did a lovely walk on Sunday in Woodbridge, local Southwold brewery @Adnams has a great list of local circular walks starting/ending at their pubs and we have done a few so far this year. Really loved this one as we timed it just right for the sun to set and I got some lovely shots of the River Deben which snakes its way along the right of the town. You walk past the Tide Mill and some shipwrecks and old warehouses. There are also some boatyards down there too which always make for interesting shots.

Really look forward to seeing The Imitation Game in the cinema, hear that BC gives a great performance as Alan Turing. Went over to Bletchley Park earlier this year and had a look around, the bombe code breaking machine is incredible super complicated and huge in size. There is also a beautiful slate statue/artwork of Alan Turing by Stephen Kettle.

Looking through the visitors book is intriguing too…
